Freelancing: An Update

A few weeks ago I wrote about leaving university and working for myself at Voltronik. Today I’m giving you an update.

What I’ve Been Up To

I’ve been doing a lot of reading. I’ve grabbed a bunch of eBooks about web design recently. Smashing Magazine have a whole host of these and they’re just gold dust. Some of them are on sale at the moment too. I also picked up a free copy of ‘The Start-Up Guide’ by Start-Up Britain. It’s a good read, if not a little basic but it’s good to go over this stuff again once in a while. I have certainly improved my knowledge in many areas of web design recently.

I have made some massive updates to the site too. Lots of new content including some very competitive prices which are on show on the site. Nothing hidden.

Is It Working?

Yes it is. I have done more websites this year than I did for the entire of last year which is a good thing. I am working longer hours but I enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like work – bliss!

I am also currently awaiting delivery of my business cards. I found myself a really great printer based in the UK and am working closely with them to get some awesome results. Stay tuned and there will no doubt be a blog post and a sneak peek on my Dribbble account about them 😉

My quest for a more sociable role in the web design community is ongoing but I’m compensating by meeting with other creative individuals in my area. I have a few meetings in April which I’m definitely looking forward to. I’m also on the look out for some web design events across the south that don’t cost the earth. If anyone knows of any, please let me know or get in touch!

The Future

At the moment, although busier, Voltronik is not where I want it to be. I want it to be better and I am going to work so hard at it this year I will only know by this time next year if it has worked. Let’s hope things carry on the way they have been.
